RC Skill Levels Explained

Choosing the right RC model can feel overwhelming with so many options available. At RC Geeks we've made it simple by classifying every RC car, plane, helicopter and drone into three clear skill levels — so you can find the right model whether you're buying for a child, a complete beginner or an experienced hobbyist looking for maximum performance.

🟢 Beginner Perfect for first-time RC drivers and pilots

Beginner models are designed to be easy to control and forgiving, making them ideal for anyone picking up an RC model for the first time. Whether it's an RC car for a child, a first drone or an entry-level RC plane, these models feature stable handling and durable construction so new users can enjoy the experience without worrying about complicated controls.

Typically suitable for ages: 6+ with adult supervision

Beginner models are recommended for:

  • First-time RC car, plane or helicopter users
  • Younger drivers and pilots learning the basics
  • Parents buying a first RC gift for a child
  • Casual hobbyists who want simple, enjoyable RC fun

These models are the best way to get started in the RC hobby. Popular beginner RC cars include the RCG Racing Spryte, Wind Speed and MT-One. Our beginner RC planes are foam-based and ultra-stable, ideal for first flights.

🔵 Beginner+ More speed, more excitement

Beginner+ models offer more speed and performance while remaining relatively accessible. They are ideal for users who are comfortable with the basics and want something faster, more capable and more exciting — without the steep learning curve of full performance models.

Typically suitable for ages: 10+

Beginner+ models are suitable for:

  • Older kids and teenagers ready for more speed
  • Beginners wanting more performance from their RC car or plane
  • Drivers and pilots with some RC experience looking to step up
  • Adults wanting a capable model without advanced setup requirements

In the RC car range, Beginner+ models typically feature brushless motors for higher speeds. In the RC plane category, most fixed-wing models with a gyro stabiliser fall into this level — offering more capable flight while remaining controllable. RC helicopters at this level offer improved agility and speed over entry-level models.

Popular Beginner+ models include the RCG Racing MT-One Brushless and Wind Speed Brushless.

🔴 Performance Built for experienced hobbyists

Performance models deliver the highest speeds, power and agility across our RC car, plane and helicopter ranges. These are designed for experienced RC drivers and pilots who are comfortable with advanced controls and want maximum performance from their model.

Typically suitable for ages: 14+

Performance models are best suited to:

  • Experienced RC hobbyists across cars, planes and helicopters
  • Users seeking high-speed RC car performance
  • Pilots comfortable with manual flight modes and advanced RC plane controls
  • Drivers and pilots who want full control without electronic assistance

At this level, RC cars typically feature high-powered brushless motors, adjustable suspension and advanced electronics. RC planes may require more precise inputs and offer less assisted flight. RC helicopters at performance level demand real skill to fly and reward experienced pilots with impressive agility and speed.
